In the afternoon a bear roused from a winter nap has been noticed on the suburbs of Przemyśl. The local residents did not believe their eyes. Witnesses immediately alarmed the Police, Fire Brigade and Veterinary Service whose task was to separate the lost bear from human habitat. A decision was taken on temporary leading the little bear into the anesthesia, and then transporting it to our Rehabilitation Centre of Protected Animals in the purpose of assessing his health condition. Hunters were equipped with special anaesthetizing rifle. In the sequence of 10 hours from commencing the action four shots were fired. All accurate, but the bear was so excited that he didn't give up and he didn't submit himself to the effect of the anesthetic. Each time the dose of the medicine has been increased. Accompanying, quickly falling dusk didn't help the action. About 01.00 a.m. after a bear had been tracked down again, we fired the fifth shot which turned out to be effective. The animal fell sound asleep and it was safely transported to us. A bear turned out to be a 3 years old female of brown bear, weighing about 100 kg. After the detailed inspection of the animal we stated no visible injuries. Female bear turned out to be fully healthy, and her condition ascertained no stipulations. At first we suspected that the animal had escaped from the Ukrainian Zoo in Samborze, but then information was denied. After shared consultation with the Regional Management of the Environmental Protection in Rzeszów we stated that there was no need of exposing little bear to the unnecessary stress associated with the temporary stay in the captivity, and then new surrendering it to the anesthesia in order to release it. Dr. Wojciech Smetana from the Polish Academy of Sciences had put the telemetric collar to our bear with a view to monitoring her distant fates, and then she was exported to forests between Bircza and Arłamowo, where she could again enjoy the freedom. This time she could safely stroll a long way from urbanized areas. Amongst many hypotheses and the speculation what attracted female bear to our city, the most probable one state that a bear paid friendly visit of the bear that proudly stands in the shield of Przemyśl.
